Real Time Strategy

How do you manage your team, your company or anything for that matter in today’s complex, dynamic, and uncertain business environment?

Companies and Management Teams are continuously exposed to numerous challenges, including innovation, technological disruptions, global competition and shifting economic, social, and regulatory conditions. To stand any chance of survival or growth, decision makers must lead their enterprises with something more than traditional long-term business planning processes.

What is required is an effective real-time strategy!
Real-Time Strategy refer to the notion that in complex and dynamic systems it is very difficult to predict what will happen next, as the number of parameters and variables and their inter-dependencies are too many resulting in an exponentially larger number of combinations of outcomes. This means that decisions cannot be planned ahead, but have to be made in real-time, based on principles and patterns rather than fixed rules.

This is very much real life where we learn from childhood through experimentation (more specifically playing!) how the world around us functions and more often how the rules of play change and force us to adapt our understanding and assumptions. In fact the best way to understand this is through strategic games, where the player(s) are faced with different challenges and have very limited time to react, making experience (exposure to different events) a very important ingredient in the quest for victory.

Play is our natural way of adapting and developing new skills. It is what prepares us for emergence, and keeps us open to serendipity, to new opportunities. (Brown Stuart: ”Play”, Avery, 2009).

Play, Learning, Exploration & Storytelling

In his book "Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us" Daniel Pink, basically says "Carrots & Sticks are so last Century, for 21st century work, we need to upgrade to autonomy, mastery and purpose."

People, and I am guessing not only in the 21st century, need a common higher purpose (in this case a real / clear company mission), they need a degree of autonomy and control around the work they do (nobody likes to be told what to do) and they need to grow, become better at what they do (otherwise - based on the theory of FLOW developed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" - they get bored).
People unlike machines can far exceed their 100% capacity when they find themselves in the right environment and perhaps more important when they understand the reasons and purpose of what they are trying to achieve!

That is why we believe that it is very important for any organisation to have happy people, people that share the same goals and people that love what they do.
